Striped Christmas Stocking

by Linda

It was October of 2001, and I decided it was time to make some new Christmas stockings for the family. I thought this time I'd knit them instead of sewing them as I had in the past (ironic considering the contents of this web site).

I went yarn browsing and found some of that sparkly Christmas yarn. This type of yarn usually doesn't appeal to me, but it looked and felt so luxurious, I thought - I gotta try this stuff! So, I picked up a few balls of the ones with the gold thread (traditional colours like burgundy and off white) and a few of those with the silver (clear, more modern looking colours). I figured I'd sort out the rest later. Let the games begin...

  1. Cast on 42 sts, arrange stitches 15/12/15. Leave an extra long tail at your cast on edge if you want to make a loop for hanging.
  2. With main colour (which you'll also use for the heel and the toe), work 12 rounds of k2 p1 ribbing.
  3. Stripes - Choose the 2 or 3 colours you'll be using for this stocking. You're already using one of them for the ribbing - we'll call it M (for Main). One of them should be white, off white, ecru, or a similar light coloured neutral - we'll call that one W (for White). The third colour, if used, we'll call C (for Contrast Colour).
  4. Follow the table below for the stripe pattern, depending on whether you're using 2 colours or 3 colours in total. Work stocking stitch for the following number of rounds in the colours stated.

  5. Heel Flap - Switch to Main, and working from wrong side (inside), purl 11 sts from ndl 1 then 11 sts from ndl 3 - 22 sts in total worked. Place extra (instep) sts on spare ndl or stitch holder for now.
  6. Slip first st, then knit across the other 21 sts. Turn and slip first st, then purl 21. Continue in stocking stitch til there are 17 rows worked in Main, end right side (outside) facing.
  7. Knit 14 sts, k2tog, turn.
  8. Slip first st, purl 6, purl 2 tog, turn.
  9. Slip first st, k7, k2tog, turn.
  10. Slip first st, p8, p2tog, turn.
  11. Continue in this manner, increasing the amount of stitches knitted or purled by one for each row, til all 22 sts have been worked, end right side facing. You should have 14 sts on your ndl.
  12. With Contrast for the 3 colour stocking, or with Main for the 2 colour stocking, and working on these 14 sts, knit 2 sts tog, k10, k2tog - 12 sts.
  13. Continuing with same colour, onto same ndl, pick up 11 sts along first side of heel flap, and pick up on st between ndls. On 2nd ndl, knit across the 20 instep sts. 3rd ndl, pick up a st between ndls, pick up 11 sts along second side of heel flap, k6 from first ndl. Sts should be 18/20/18.
  14. Knit 1 round even.
  15. Knit to within last 3 sts on first needle, knit 2 tog, k1. Knit across 2nd ndl. On 3rd ndl, k1, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit to end of needle. Stitches will number 17/20/17.
  16. Knit 1 more round even (without decreasing). You now have 4 rounds completed.
  17. Repeat these last two rounds, in colour stripes as indicated below, until sts number 10/20/10. Then continue working even in stripe pattern below, then complete toe.
