A thick, comfortable sock with a nice rolled cuff done in DK weight yarn. Good if you get sore feet and swollen ankles from time to time.

  1. With black, cast on 40 sts onto dpns. 12/16/12
  2. Knit 5 rounds plain.
  3. Purl 5 rounds.
  4. With grey, knit 5 rounds.
  5. Purl 5 rounds.
  6. With black, knit 5 rounds.
  7. Purl 5 rounds.
  8. Continuing with black, knit next round, increasing 8 sts evenly - total 48 sts. Rearrange sts on needles to 16/16/16.
  9. Knit next round without increasing.
  10. With grey, knit one round plain.
  11. With black, *k2, sl1*, repeat around.
  12. Knit one round plain.
  13. With grey, knit one round plain.
  14. Repeat the last three rows 4 times altogether.
  15. With black, *k2, sl1*, repeat around. Cut grey, leaving length for darning.
  16. Heel Flap: Continuing with black, knit across 16 sts, turn.
  17. Purl across the 16 sts just knitted, then k1, *p1, k2*, repeat for another 16 sts. Turn.
  18. Work garter stitch for 32 rows altogether (16 purl ridges), slipping first st of each row purlwise.
  19. Turn Heel: K19, k2tog, turn. *Sl1, work 6 stitches, k2 tog tbl, turn. Sl1, work 6 stitches, k2tog, turn.* Repeat between *'s til 8 stitches remain on needle, right side facing ready to work next row.
  20. Knit across first needle, pick up 18 sts along side of heel flap. With second needle, pick up one st in the space between the first and second needle, knit across second needle, pick up a st between second and third needle. With third needle, pick up 18 sts along side of heel flap. Knit 4 sts from first needle onto third needle - 22/18/22 sts on needles.
  21. With grey, k12, k2tog, k to end of first needle (8 more sts). On second needle, k2tog, knit across to last 2 sts, k2tog tbl (through back loops, or ssk). On third needle, k8, i2tog tbl (or ssk) knit to end of needle (12 more sts) - 22/16/22.
  22. With black, k1, *sl1, k2*, repeat to end of needle, ending k1. On second needle, k1, *sl1, k2*, repeat to end of needle. On third needle, *sl1, k2*, repeat to end of needle - 21/16/21.
  23. Knit 1 round plain with black.
  24. With grey, on first needle k11, k2tog, k8. Second needle knit across. Last needle, k8, k2tog tbl (or ssk), k12.
  25. Work next round in black, knitting sts that were knitted two rows below and slipping sts that were slipped two rows below except for sts decreased in previous row - they should be knitted. Note: The slip stitch pattern will be messed up for a few rounds due to the number of sts and the decreases.
  26. Knit one round black.
  27. With grey, knit to within 10 sts of end of needle, k2tog, k8. Knit across second needle. Third needle, k8, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit to end of needle.
  28. Repeat last three rounds, knitting one less st at beg of first needle and end of third needle for each decrease round, til 52 sts remain on needles - 18/16/18.
  29. To realign the slip stitch pattern, on the next plain black round, knit around to last two sts on third needle. Knit those two sts together - 18/16/17.
  30. Move one st from second needle to third needle - 18/15/18.
  31. Continue even in pattern til sock is about 1.5 - 2 inches short of foot length, ending with a plain black round, knitting 2 sts together at end of each needle. Rearrange sts on needles to 12/24/12. Cut grey, toe area is worked in black only.
  32. Knit 9, k2tog, k1. K1, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit to within last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. K1, k2 tog tbl (or ssk), k1 - 11/22/11.
  33. Work next 2 rounds plain.
  34. Knit 8, k2tog, k1. K1, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit to within last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. K1, k2 tog tbl (or ssk), knit to end of needle - 10/20/10.
  35. Work next 2 rounds plain.
  36. Repeat last three rounds, continuing to decrease as established, til 20 sts remain on needles.
  37. Continue decreasing on every round til 12 sts remain on needles.
  38. Knit the 3 sts from first needle onto third needle.
  39. Graft toe.
  40. Make another one the same.
