Folksy Socks

I wanted to do a simply patterned stripe, and once I'd done the first
stripe, it struck me as rather 'folksy' looking, particularly in these
colours, hence the name.
- 1 50g ball Paton's True North DK (50% wool 50% acrylic) in burgundy, or
other double knitting or worsted weight yarn
- 100g ball Paton's Decor (75% acrylic 25% wool) in beige, or other
knitting worsted weight yarn
- gauge 6 sts per inch for a firm fabric
- set of double pointed needles - I used 3.25 mm
- size women's large about ten inches in length
- Cast on 44 sts with beige, do 17 rows k2 p2 ribbing - 16/12/16
- Knit one round with burgundy.
- Next round, *k1 with burgundy, k1 with beige*.
- Next round, *k1 with beige, k1 with burgundy*.
- Next round, *k1 with burgundy, k1 with beige*.
- Knit one round with burgundy.
- These five rounds make one stripe pattern.
- With beige, knit five rounds in plain stocking stitch.
- Heel Flap: Using both strands, k 15 sts, turn. K the 15 sts just
worked, and 15 more sts from next needle - total 30 sts on needle.
- Work garter st on these 30 sts for 30 rows, slipping the first st of
each row.
- Turn Heel: K18, k2tog, turn.
- Slip 1, k8, k2tog, turn. Repeat until 10 sts remain, end right side
facing.
- Working with beige only, onto first needle knit these 10 sts, pick up
16 sts along side of heel flap. On second needle, pick up a st between
first and second needle, knit across, pick up a st between second and
third needle. On third needle, pick up 16 sts on side of heel flap, knit
5 sts from the first needle. 21/16/21
- Knit one more round with beige.
- With burgundy, work the 5 row stripe pattern.
- Knit across first needle. On second needle k2tog, knit across to last
2 sts, k2tog. On third needle, knit across. 21/14/21
- Work one round with beige.
- Knit to within last 8 sts of first needle, k2tog, k6. Knit across
second needle. On third needle, k6, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit to end of
needle.
- Work these last two rounds four times in total (8 beige rounds) -
17/14/17.
- With burgundy, work the 5 round stripe pattern.
- Knit one round plain with beige.
- As before, knit across first needle. On second needle k2tog, knit
across to last 2 sts, k2tog. On third needle, knit across. 16/14/16
- Knit 6 more rounds plain.
- Work the five row stripe pattern.
- Continue repeating 8 rounds plain with beige, and then the five round
stripe pattern til you're about an inch short of the desired foot length,
preferably after having just worked at least a few rounds of beige (it
looks nicer this way). Rearrange sts to 11/23/12.
- Working with both beige and burgundy together, on first needle knit
to within last 3 sts, k2tog, knit last st. On next needle, k1, k2tog
tbl (or ssk), knit to within last 3 sts, k2tog, knit last st. On last
needle, k1, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit last st.
- Continue decreasing EVERY ROW til 14 sts remain on needles - 3/7/4.
Knit sts from first needle onto third needle, break yarn and graft toe.
