Melanie's House Socks

by Linda

I made these socks in a weekend for my daughter's upcoming birthday, using Bernat's Ragg Yarn (knitting worsted acrylic with no dye lot) in grey.

The body of the sock is knitted plain, since the ragg style yarn looks nice this way and any stitch pattern would likely be lost with this yarn.

The sole is in garter stitch to (hopefully) make it wear better and provide a bit of cushioning, since my daughter will be wearing these around the house - more like slippers than socks.

As I write this, I haven't yet decided whether to add some additional cushioning to the sole, toe and heel by weaving some yarn through the sts on the inside of the sock, but this was part of the original design plan. If you decide to do this, extra yarn will be required.

  1. Cast 36 sts loosely onto 3 dpns. 12/12/12
  2. Do 24 rounds of k2 p2 ribbing.
  3. On 24 sts (first 2 needles), knit across. Turn and knit across the 24 sts. Repeat these two rows for heel flap (12 garter st ridges). End right side facing.
  4. Working on these same 24 sts, k15, k2tog, turn. *Slip 1 st, k6, k2tog tbl (through back loop), turn. Slip 1 st, k6, k2tog, turn.* Repeat between *'s til all sts are worked and you have 8 sts left, right side facing.
  5. Knit 8, pickup 13 sts along heel flap. Next needle pick up a st in space between first and second needle, knit across 12 sts, pick up a st in space between second and third needle. Last needle pick up 13 sts along heel flap, knit 4 sts from first needle onto last needle.
  6. P8, k9 on first needle. Next needle k2tog, k12, k2tog. Last needle k9, p8. This round establishes the garter stitch pattern for the sole and (hopefully) gets rid of the the hole that can suddenly appear in this area of a sock.
  7. Next round, knit around.
  8. P8, k3, k2tog, k3. Knit across second needle. On third needle k3, k2tog tbl, k3, p8.
  9. Next round and every other round til toe area is reached, knit around.
  10. P8, k3, k2tog, k2. Knit across second needle. On third needle, k2, k2tog tbl, k3, p8.
  11. Next decrease round: P8, k2, k2tog, k2. Knit across second needle. On third needle, k2, k2tog tbl, k2, p8.
  12. Last decrease round: P8, k1, k2tog, k2. Knit across second needle. On third needle, k2, k2tog tbl, k1, p8.
  13. You should not have 36 sts remaining, ending with the plain knit round. 12/12/12
  14. P8, k4. Next needle knit across. Last needle k4, p8.
  15. Next round, knit around.
  16. Repeat these two rounds til desired length is reached. I worked til I had 24 garter st ridges on the sole (48 rounds).
  17. Rearraange sts on needles to 9/18/9 for toe.

For the following rounds, do not knit a plain round between the decrease rounds.

  18. K6, k2tog, k1. Next needle k1, k2tog tbl, k12, k2tog, k1. Last needle k1, k2tog tbl, k6.
  19. p5, p2tog, p1. Next needle p1, p2tog, p1. Next needle p1, p2tog, p5.
  20. Continue decreasing every row as established til total of 12 sts remain. Knit across 3 sts on first needle.
  21. Graft toe.
  22. Make another one to match. ;)
