Another great sock in Paton's Classic Wool, a nice merino blend, this
time worked with miniature cables. No cable needle required. These
are ankle socks and therefore quite short in the leg.
About 90 - 100 grams knitting worsted, I used Paton's Classic Wool
in dark taupe - more yarn required for longer socks
Set of 4 dpn's in appropriate size, I used 3.25 mm
Gauge - 5 cable pattern repeats in 3 inches
Fits adult woman's large foot, about 9 inches
Cast on 40 sts and work 10 rounds k1p1 ribbing - 12/16/12
*K1, p1, (k1 and make 1 in same st), p1*, repeat from * to * around -
15/20/15
*k1, p1, k2, p1*, repeat around.
*k1, p1, cr, p1*, repeat around CR (Cross) - skip first st, knit second st on needle, do
not remove from needle, knit first (skipped) st, remove both from
needle.
*k1, p1, k2, p1*, repeat around.
Repeat last 3 rows 4 times altogether. For a longer sock, work
more pattern repeats.
Heel Flap: K 10, place last 5 sts onto needle 2 to be worked
later, turn.
Slip 1, k9, k 14 from other needle, put rem sts onto ndl 2.
Slip 1, knit across remaining 23 sts on needle.
Repeat this last row til 14 garter st ridges show
on right side of work, end ready to work right side.
Repeat last row til 8 sts remain on needle, ready to
work a right side row.
Knit across those 8 sts. Onto same needle, pick up 16 sts along
side of heel flap. Onto next needle, pick up a st in space between
needles, work across ndl 2 in cable pattern as already established, pick
up a st in space between
needles. On third needle, pick up 16 sts along other side of heel flap,
k 4 sts from ndl 1 onto ndl 3 - 20/28/20
Knit across ndl 1 to within last 3 sts on needle, k2tog, k1.
On next needle, k2tog, work in pattern (the CR row) to within last 2
sts on ndl, knit 2 together. On last ndl, k1, k2tog tbl (or ssk),
knit to end of needle. 19/26/19
Knit across ndl 1, work in pattern across ndl 2, knit across
ndl 3.
Knit across ndl 1, work in pattern across ndl 2, knit across
ndl 3.
Repeat these last three rounds (making gusset decreases on
CR round of pattern) til 48 sts remain.
Continue to work evenly til you're an inch or so short of
the desired finished length (I worked 24 pattern repeats from
cuff to this point).
Shape Toe: Rearrange sts to 12/24/12. Knit to within last 3
sts of ndl 1, k2tog, k1. On ndl 2, k 1, k2tog tbl (or ssk), knit
to within last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. On ndl 3, k1, k2tog tbl, knit
to end of needle.
Knit one round with no decreases.
Repeat these last two rounds til 24 sts remain on needles.
Knit sts from needle 1 onto needle 3, break yarn and graft
toe. Weave in yarn ends.
A light coloured wool will show off the stitches to greater
effect than a dark one.
If making a longer sock, don't make it too long, or you'll
have to contend with figuring out how to do decreases in the
cable pattern when moving from calf to ankle area.
