String Socks

[String Socks]

I call these my string socks because when I first purchased the yarn, I thought it looked just like standard kitchen string. It knits up wonderfully soft, though, and is well worth using. I throw them in the washer and hang them to dry. Drying them in the dryer tends to shink them a bit.

There is no gusset in these socks, nor is there any grafting of the toe.

  1. Cast on 40 stitches (12/16/12), join to form circle.
  2. Cable Rib:
    - Knit 2 stitches, knitting into back of each, then purl two stitches. Repeat these four stitches around.
    - Repeat this round two more times (three in total).
    - Knit 2nd stitch in front, then without removing it knit into front of first stitch, remove both from needle; purl 2. Repeat this pattern around.
    - Repeat these four stitches for pattern.
    - Work until there are five cable twists and three final KB2, P2 rows.
  3. - Knit one round plain.
  4. - Slip one stitch purlways, knit one stitch, repeat this pattern around.
  5. - Repeat these two rounds twice more (total six rounds).
  6. Heel Flap:

    - Purl 10, purl 10 from next needle, place other two stitches on instep needle, turn.

  8. Turn Heel:

    - Slip first stitch purlways, purl 10 stitches, purl two together, turn.
    - Slip first st, work 10 sts across in fake rib pattern, ssk, turn.
    - Repeat these last two rows til all stitches are taken up (12 sts on needle).
  9. On first needle, knit 2 tog, across next 8 heel stitches, knit 2 tog again; then knit up 11 stitches along side of heel flap. On next needle, knit up a stitch in space between heel and instep needles. Continue knitting across instep needle, knit up a stitch in the space between instep and heel needles. On third needle, knit up 11 stitches, then knit first 5 stitches from heel needle onto this same needle. (16/22/16)
  10. Next round knit sts on needle one; K2tog, K20, K2tog on needle two; knit sts on needle three. (16/20/16)
  11. Continue in Fake Rib pattern around the sock:
